Meet the Team: Martina Hovey, Dental Assistant Extraordinaire

Martina is a Minnesota Native who grew up in Coon Rapids, just outside Minneapolis. Throughout her career, she has held a variety of roles with both Metro Dentalcare and Orthodontic Care Specialists, including Dental Assistant, Mentor, Practice Manager, and Practice Team Lead.

Her journey through the dental field began in High School. Martina was a member of the Coon Rapids Executive Secretaries of Tomorrow (CREST), through which she worked in a local dental office during her Junior and Senior year. She continued to work in the office when she was home from college – where she was studying to be an accountant. After quickly realizing she was not being fulfilled with a typical ‘desk job’, she enrolled at the Lakeland Dental Academy and began a career as a dental assistant. Little did she know, this decision to change career paths would lead her to a variety of opportunities and leadership roles!

Q&A with Martina:

What was your first impression of Metro Dentalcare, and how has it changed?

I first joined the group in 2002. At that time, Metro was one of the larger dental practices – but they still maintained a family type of atmosphere. Since then, the group has continued to grow even more! They have become more organized as a result of that growth, but have kept the same family feel that they’ve always had. I believe that American Dental Partners is a wonderful organization. They have the structure that supports these larger group environments yet they still make it possible for us all to feel like a family. I’m happy to be home!

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

There’s so much! However, patient care is the real reason we are here. I love that I have an opportunity to train and encourage Dental Assistants to give a great experience to our patients. In the end, that is our shared goal.

What’s the biggest difference in working with Metro Dentalcare as opposed to another Dental Practice?

Our structure and our emphasis on compliance. Being a part of a larger group and the support of American Dental Partners gives our employees the opportunities to grow, change, and keep learning. Metro Dentalcare is also accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. This means that we meet the organizations rigorous, nationally recognized standards for health care services. It’s important because we hold ourselves to a higher standard in order to give great care to patients.

How do the different team members work together at Metro Dentalcare

We’re truly a family. Like any family, we have our ups and downs and strengths and weaknesses. But no matter what, we all respect each other in our roles. No matter what your going through or what challenges you are facing, you have a team of people who are supportive and understanding. We need to all be on the same team to achieve our common goal – which is giving our patients a great experience.

What are some hobbies you enjoy outside the office?

I come from a large family, and we love to travel together. Most recently, we stayed in Charleston South Carolina. We rented a beach house and a group of 17 of us had a great time together.

When I’m not travelling, I like to host dinner parties. I’m in a Dinner Club and we each take turns hosting dinners with different themes. I’ve done a Titanic theme and a ‘Take-Your Breath Away’ theme before, and my next one will be a Feast of the Seven Fishes, which is an Italian Tradition.

If you weren’t in the Dental field, what would your dream job be?

It certainly wouldn’t be a desk job – I would love to open and run my own Bistro. Everybody likes good food – and I love to cook!

What kind of community events to you get to participate in with Metro Dentalcare?

I try and do as many as I can to give back to the community. We do the Give Kids a Smile event every year, we’ve done a lot of work with the Minnesota Twins, and most recently I participated in the annual Oral Cancer Walk.

If you could give one piece of advice to your patients, what would it be?

To only brush the teeth you want to keep (haha!)
