Making Patient Relationships a Priority – Meet Debbie McDaniel

Strong patient relationships are the lifeblood of any successful practice. For Debbie, her connection to her patients and the local community make her an irreplaceable asset to the Cincinnati Dental Services team! We asked her a few questions about her role as a Hygienist and the impact she has on her patients in our latest ‘Meet the Team’ highlight.

 

What made you want to become a Hygienist?

I was working at the Front Desk for a dental office in Pennsylvania, and really enjoyed working with the Dental Hygienist that worked there. She was always very friendly, and I got to see the interactions she had with her patients each day. As I started to learn more about her role, it sounded like a great opportunity for me to help people – which is something I always knew I wanted to do. I moved closer to my family in Cincinnati and enrolled in Hygiene school to start my career!

Why did you choose to join the team at CDS?

Deb McD3After Hygiene school, I had a lot of responsibilities. I was a single mother with two boys, so having a career that offered benefits and understood the needs of me and my family was the most important. Cincinnati Dental Services provided options for health insurance, a 401(k) plan, and a lot of other benefits like accident insurance, a health savings plan, and more.

What’s made you stay with CDS for all these years?

I’ve been with CDS for 14 ½ years now. When I started my career, I had no idea I would end up working for a practice for this long. What’s kept me here has been the relationships that I’ve formed with my patients. I’m a member of the community I serve – so it’s not uncommon for me to see patients outside the office. It’s so rewarding to have people come up to me outside the practice and share with me how they have changed their habits, or have kids come up to me and tell me how they’re really working on brushing and flossing their teeth.

I’ve seen my patients grow up from being little kids to young adults, I know about what’s going on with their family and they know what’s going on with mine.

These bonds I’ve been able to form with my patients is something that I’m most proud of in my career.

How would you describe the team environment at CDS?

The team here at White Oak is very tight knit. I love being able to work with the doctors here, I’ve learned so much and received so much support from them through my career. Because everyone on the team has such a positive relationship – we have the ability to work collaboratively and communicate.

Not every day is going to be perfect, and whenever there’s a conflict or challenge, this team comes together to support one another. We all have the same goal, and that’s making sure our patients are getting the best care.

When you’re all aligned towards that outcome, it helps you to prioritize and get through your day smoothly.

What can you tell us about your schedule?

Because CDS is a group practice, you aren’t tied to the same schedule as the doctor. If my dentist is away on vacation, I can still come to work and serve my patients. I have the flexibility to work my own time out of the office around what’s best for me and my patients.

We also offer extended hours to our patients, and are available from 7:00 am to 5:30 p.m. This gives me the option to take more patients between those hours, so I can have a four-day work week. Being a hygienist can be physically demanding, so I really like building my schedule in a way that lets me take that extra day to regroup and rest so I can come back fresh.

What does ‘Quality Patient Care’ mean to you?

For me, it means always doing my best. No matter who sits in my chair, they are someone’s family member, and I strive to treat them with the same respect and care that I would treat my own family member. Dental appointments aren’t always a person’s favorite thing to do, so I understand that and try to make sure they are comfortable and relaxed while they are here. I’m keeping myself up to date with new products and training so that I can keep improving my skills. I put a lot of hard work into what I do, and I care about doing a good job and putting my best effort forward with each of my patients.
