Growing Together: Meet Dr. Vieregge, Metro Dentalcare

Since joining the group in 2004, Dr. Brian Vieregge has witnessed Metro Dentalcare (MDC) undergo a variety of transitions and growth. Throughout his career, he’s leveraged the opportunity to participate in leadership roles that have helped shape the group to what it is today. In our latest ‘Meet the Team’ highlight – we asked him to share his experience and the changes and projects he’s been a part of.

 

How did you become interested in the Dental Field?

Familypic32018As a 1st generation dentist, I didn’t have any exposure to the field early on or a family member who was able to steer me in that direction. I did always enjoy science, and knew I wanted to go into some kind of healthcare related profession.

In my 2nd and 3rd year of college, I called my local dentist from home and asked if I would be able to shadow him. I got to watch his interactions with his patients and the role of a dentist started to appeal to me. It seemed like a good opportunity to blend my interest in science and healthcare with my desire to help people. After my undergraduate studies, I was accepted to the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.

How has your career with MDC evolved over the past years?

I’ve been with Metro Dentalcare for 14 ½ years, so I’ve seen the group go through a lot of growth and transformation in that time. Being a new dentist and so ‘green’ to the industry, I really appreciated the chance to have so many great mentors. Now, that journey seems to have come full circle because I’m the one that is helping to mentor and guide our new doctors. I remember how valuable and how helpful it was to have someone to support me, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to give that back today.

What kind of changes have you seen take place during your time at MDC?

I’m fortunate to have witness a lot of growth and positive changes with this group. The technology alone has come such a long way. When I started we were working off of paper records and conventional x-ray machines. Today, we’ve fully transitioned into the digital world with Electronic Records, digital X-Ray machines, and a modern practice environment for our patients.

As far as structure, we partnered with American Dental Partners Inc. (ADPI) in 2007. That partnership allowed us to accelerate our growth and gain valuable support on the administrative side. We maintain our doctor leadership and control over patient care but we gain the muscle of a national organization to provide us with resources and business services. Having a business partner like ADPI is the reason we’ve been able to have so many leadership opportunities for our team members.

AAAHC0 brightAchieving accreditation through the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) was an exciting process to be involved with. We made the decision to seek accreditation because we wanted to make sure we were providing the safest environment possible for our patients and our staff. We implemented procedures that made us better prepared to handle any emergencies, as well as new processes to help minimize the chance of any safety hazards. It’s a unique recognition for a dental practice, and we’re proud to have it.

What opportunities have you had to pursue leadership roles with Metro Dentalcare?

Being in a group like Metro has also allowed me to take part in a variety of leadership roles. I’m a co-chair of our Lab Committee and the co-chair of the Continuing Education Committee, in addition to my role as a mentor. As an affiliate of American Dental Partners, our team members have an opportunity to participate in the ADPI Leadership Institute. This is a four year program that focuses on communication, conflict resolution and leadership coaching. It’s helpful to learn more about my personal leadership style as well as how I can work better with other members of my practice.

About two years ago, I was approached with an opportunity for Partnership. I’m proud to be part of the doctor leadership that is moving our group forward and helping us to continue to grow.

What advice would you give a new doctor looking to start their dental career with Metro Dentalcare?

If you have a picture in your mind of what ‘group practice’ is – don’t put Metro Dentalcare in that bubble. We’re so much more than that.

We’re a network of doctors who genuinely want you to be able to build your career and grow, but we give you the flexibility to do so at a comfortable pace. If you want to get more involved and join a committee, or help lead a new initiative, you have the opportunity to do that as well.

work photoPart of that support also includes having the ability to treat my patients the best way that I know how. If I want to perform a root canal I have the support to go ahead and do that, or if I’m more comfortable referring those procedures to a colleague, we have a great internal specialty network where I can do that too.

With Metro Dentalcare, you can bring your own style and skillsets to your practice. There’s so much room for you to grow – whether you are a new doctor, or you have been practicing for 10+ years. I’m so proud of the team that I work with, and I’m looking forward to what the future holds for us.
